RENAULT S.A is a French multinational car maker that was founded in 1899 by the Renault brothers: Louis, Marcel and Fernand. The company's headquarters are located in Boulogne-Billancourt, France. RENAULT owns and markets several car brands, such as Alpine or Dacia. Since 1999, it has also been a part of the RENAULT-NISSAN Alliance. Historically, the company has produced a variety of vehicles, including tractors, trucks and tanks. RENAULT taxi cabs were credited with saving Paris during World War I; RENAULT aircraft engines powered WWI-era planes flown by French, British and American pilots. Nowadays, RENAULT also makes hybrid and electric consumer cars.
RENAULT has enjoyed significant success in motorsports. A Renault-powered ALPINE 110 won the inaugural World Rally Championship in 1973; a RENAULT ALPINE A442B driven by Didier Pironi and Jean-Pierre Jaussaud won the 1978 24 Hours of Le Mans. Since 1983, RENAULT has provided engines for FORMULA 1® teams, including LOTUS (3rd place in the Constructors' Championship in 1984 and 1986), Williams (five Constructors' Championships in 1992-1994 and 1996-1997), Benetton (Constructors' Championship in 1995), and Red Bull (four consecutive Constructors' Championships in 2010-2013). RENAULT has fielded its own FORMULA 1® team in 1977-1985, 2002-2011, and from 2016 until today (since 2021 as ALPINE), winning two consecutive Constructors' Championships in 2005 and 2006 (with lead driver Fernando Alonso capturing the Drivers' Championship on both occasions). RENAULT has also been involved in FORMULA E since its inception, partnering with Spark to develop SRT 01, the first-generation FORMULA E car, and winning the first three Teams' Championships, in 2014-15, 2015-16, and 2016-17 (as RENAULT E.DAMS).
