The PORSCHE CARRERA GT is the successor of the PORSCHE 911 GT1 Straßenversion. The concept of the car was unveiled in 2000. Sportscar international named the CARRERA GT number one on its list of top 10 sportscars of the 2000s, and number 8 on top 10 sportscars of all time.

The car itself is powered by a 5.7L V10 engine. The V10 was a unit secretly built by PORSCHE for the Footwork Formula One team in 1992, but later shelved. The engine was resurrected for the Le Mans prototype and increased in size to 5.7 litres.

PORSCHE originally planned to produce 1,500 but the plan was discontinued in 2006 due to new airbag regulations in the United States. Its successor is the PORSCHE 918 Spyder (2013-2015).
