Introduced in 1976 as the factory racing version of the Porsche 911 (930) Turbo under FIA Group 5 rules, PORSCHE 935 was an evolution of the Carrera RSR 2.1 turbo prototype which finished 2nd overall in the 1974 24 Hours of Le Mans. The car was powered by a 3.0 liter twin-turbocharged flat-6 engine designated Type 935, which would later be used in PORSCHE 962. Developed side-by-side with Porsche 934 (designed for Group 4 rules) and the PORSCHE 936 prototype (designed for Group 6 rules), it constituted PORSCHE's attempt to dominate endurance racing worldwide.
In 1977, PORSCHE began to offer the 935 to customers entering the World Championship for Makes, the IMSA GT Championship and the German Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft (DRM). A customer 935 developed by Kremer Racing and driven by Klaus Ludwig, Don Whittington and Bill Whittington won the 1979 24 Hours of Le Mans overall. The 935 also scored six outright victories in the 24 Hours of Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring, and three wins at the 1,000 km of Nürburgring. Of the 549 races it entered, it won 278.
