Aston Martin Lagonda, commonly referred to as ASTON MARTIN, is a British manufacturer of luxury cars and grand-tourers whose origins are traced back to 1913. The company is headquartered at a former RAF base in Gaydon, a village in Warwickshire, England, south-east of Birmingham, some 30 miles from the Silverstone Circuit. The name of the company incorporates the last name of one of its founders, Lionel Martin (the other being Robert Bamford); Aston Hill Climb, the name of a race in which vehicles prepared by Bamford and Martin first found success; and Lagonda, a luxury car production company acquired by ASTON MARTIN in 1947.
ASTON MARTIN owes much of its post-World War II recognition to appearances in film - specifically, in a number of James Bond films. The legendary British secret agent has driven the DB5, the DBS, the V8 Vantage Volante, the V12 Vanquish, as well as the specially-made DB10. In spite of this, the company has had its share of troubles over the years, most notably during the 1970s and 1980s, when it was repeatedly on the verge of folding. Following acquisition by FORD in 1987, ASTON MARTIN re-established itself as a brand; by the early 2000s, it earned its own design style with the new Vantage, attributed to Henrik Fisker, then-director of design at ASTON MARTIN and Ian Callum, then-director of design at JAGUAR. The style had been incorporated in virtually every model ever since, from the VANQUISH to the VANTAGE 59, and is still being updated.
Having began life as a racing car development firm, ASTON MARTIN has always had racing in its pedigree. In the 1950s and 1960s, the company developed several FORMULA 1® cars, without success. It had much more luck with its GT-style race cars: the DBR1 won the 1959 World Sportscar Championship, including an overall victory at the 1959 24 Hours of Le Mans and three consecutive wins at the 1000 km of Nürburgring (1957-1959), and early 1960s prototypes - like the DP214 - were highly competitive against more established brands, such as Ferrari (though hampered by major reliability issues). ASTON MARTIN cars and engines continued to appear among entries in prototype and GT racing series over the following decades, but lasting success only came in the 2000s. ASTON MARTIN DBR9 earned a manufacturers' title in the 2006 FIA GT Championship and two class wins at Le Mans (2007 and 2008); ASTON MARTIN DBR1-2, a joint development with LOLA, won the company a Constructors' Championship in the 2009 Le Mans Series; and ASTON MARTIN VANTAGE GTE racked up class wins at Le Mans in 2014, 2017 and 2020. In 2021, ASTON MARTIN returned to FORMULA 1® with the MERCEDES-powered AMR21.
ASTON MARTIN was introduced in the Customization Update (v2.1).
