Alfa Romeo Automobiles S.p.A. is an Italian luxury car manufacturer, founded in 1906 by Frenchman Alexandre Darracq as Società Anonima Italiana Darracq (SAID), a company that would produce and sell special Darracq models for Italy. The company was initially headquartered in Naples, but Ugo Stella - chairman of SAID - decided to move it to Portello, now a district of Milan, in late 1906. By 1909, with Darracq cars selling slowly, the board decided to re-launch the company as A.L.F.A. ("[Società] Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili", "Anonymous Lombard Automobile Factory"). In 1915, a few months after Italy entered World War I, Neapolitan engineer Nicola Romeo became majority shareholder, and production was shifted wholesale to military equipment. Car production resumed only in 1919, and the company name was changed to ALFA ROMEO the following year. In the 1930s, ALFA ROMEO came under actual government control; by the 1980s, it became a part of FIAT.
Since its inception, ALFA ROMEO was famous for producing sports cars. In the 1920s, Enzo Ferrari famously drove for ALFA - Scuderia Ferrari was originally established as a racing team fielding cars produced by the company. ALFA ROMEO has participated in FORMULA 1® since 1950, winning two Drivers' Championships (Giuseppe Farina in 1950 and Juan Manuel Fangio in 1951). ALFAs have also competed with relative success in the European Touring Car Championship (a total of 14 wins between 1966 and 2002) and in the World Sportscar Championship, winning the 1975 World Championship for Makes (with ALFA ROMEO 33TT12) and the 1977 World Championship for Sports Cars (with ALFA ROMEO 33SC12). Nicola Larini drove the ALFA ROMEO 155 V6 TI to a DTM title in 1993, winning a record 10 (out of 18) races in the process.
ALFA ROMEO was introduced in the Alfa Romeo Update (v8.2)
